Roundtables: A Conversation With the Creator of AI-Designed Viruses
Listen to the session or watch below Can AI design new life forms? In 2025, Stanford University PhD student Samuel King came up with a preliminary answer when he used a generative AI model to propose genetic blueprints for microscopic viruses. It isn’t yet an example of AI-generated life, but that could be next. Watch…arXiv AI/ML
LIBERO-PeRM: Benchmarking Personalized Robotic Manipulation
Personalization is essential for general-purpose robots to transition into household environments and achieve true practicality. While general robotic manipulation has been extensively studied, personalized robotic manipulation (PeRM) lacks a controlled benchmark for separating task completion from preference satisfaction. We introduce LIBERO-PeRM, a benchmark for preference learning in embodied agents. LIBERO-PeRM studies five questions: 1) how policies follow preferences in zero-shot settings; 2) how they learn single preferences from demonstrations; 3) how efficiently they acquire preferencarXiv AI/ML
MLExpert: Towards a Generalist Agentic Model for Autonomous Machine Learning Engineering
Large language models (LLMs) are expanding from assisting scientific research and engineering to autonomously developing and improving AI systems, advancing AI for AI (AI4AI) as a pathway toward recursive self-improvement (RSI). Workflow-driven machine learning engineering (MLE) systems provide a practical path toward this pursuit through complex orchestration that manages long-horizon experimentation, while recent MLE systems adopt model-directed interaction, allowing models to autonomously organize experiments and adapt optimization strategies based on execution feedback. However, feedback fApple Machine Learning Research
Plan or Retrieve First? A Scale Study of Tool Discovery Architectures
Tool-augmented LLM agents discover relevant APIs from large registries before planning execution, yet finite context windows prohibit injecting all tool definitions into a single prompt. The dominant approach, which we term Retrieve-then-Plan (RtP), embeds the user query and retrieves similar tools via approximate nearest-neighbor search. We study an alternative Plan-then-Retrieve (PtR) paradigm in which the LLM first generates Abstract Tool Stubs (hypothesized function signatures describing needed capabilities) which then serve as retrieval queries against the registry. Evaluating on…Apple Machine Learning Research
Code-Switching Detection via Language-Selective Dimensions in Speech Foundation Models
Code-switching (CS), the alternation between languages within an utterance, is common in multilingual speech but underrepresented in pretraining corpora. Increasing CS coverage requires finding relevant utterances in large speech collections so that they can be included in training data. One way to find such utterances is to transcribe the speech and detect language alternation in the text, but this depends on obtaining accurate multilingual transcriptions. We propose a lightweight method that detects CS directly from speech. It uses frame-level language information in pretrained speech…MIT Technology Review AI
AI breakthroughs in robotics won’t change your life any time soon
The story is a collaboration between MIT Technology Review and Aventine, a non-profit research foundation that creates and supports content about how technology and science are changing the way we live. A robot shaped like a human—white with a black head and torso—has been popping up on video feeds. Perhaps you’ve seen it dance or…Microsoft Research
Agent Lightning v1.0: A 3,500-Line Lightweight Agentic RL Framework for Training Agents with Real Harnesses
Training AI agents with reinforcement learning can be challenging because their tools, context, and decision-making are managed by complex frameworks. Agent Lightning connects existing agents to RL training, making it easier to improve them without rebuilding them.Microsoft Research
